Cysts and lipomas
These appear as lumps beneath the skin and generally do not change. Cysts can get infected and both cysts and lipomas can be uncomfortable depending on their position and type. They can also be unsightly and cause distress and affect self confidence. Any new or changing lump should be checked by a doctor and sent to your dermatology consultant if there are any concerns.
Treatment of cysts and lipomas
The main treatment is surgery to remove the lesion using a local anaesthetic. It is important that this is done by someone skilled in this type of skin surgery to minimise complications such as infection and bleeding and to get the best scar result. Tissue removed should be sent off to be checked.
